Orlando is a Leader in Innovation

Or so says Fast Company. I was browsing through the latest issue of Fast Company magazine when I got to the 2008 Smart Cities. Leading the way was London and inside the U.S. is Chicago. As I flipped the page I was surely surprised to see Orlando, FL in the mix. Here is what they had to say about our hometown:

There's more to Orlando than Mickey. It's now a hub for two burgeoning industries: interactive games -- a lively scene has sprouted around the Electronic Arts studio behind Madden NFL -- and biotech. A new medical complex in the Lake Nona area will house a University of Central Florida med school and a branch of the famed Burnham Institute for Medical Research.

I can vouch for this claim as I see more and more entrepreneurs and fast companies starting up in the greater Orlando area. By taking a look at Downtown Orlando you will see IZEA and their latest creation, Social Spark, online collaboration start-up jamblr, the EA studio, UCF Incubator program as so much more.

Hopefully this tech and innovation increase will open up new and exciting job opportunities for locals and stop the flood of great IT, developer and design talent to cities like Chicago and San Francisco.

Check out all the cities in the online version of Fast Cities 2008.

If you know of any cool tech companies in the area, please share in the comments.
