Yes, that Shaq. The former Orlando Magic All-Star is at it again, this time looking to help Orlando residents who are facing foreclosure find an alternate to losing their houses. The Orlando Sentinel got the scoop last week, as the multiple time NBA Champion and Orlando resident was downtown last Tuesday to meet with city officials about the foreclosure problem and real estate development issues that are facing our city.
A tentative plan as the Sentinel reports states that Shaq:
wants to buy the mortgages of people whose homes are in foreclosure, then give the homeowner a new mortgage with better terms. Homeowners would stay in their homes with more affordable payments, and O'Neal would turn a small profit.
While this is by no means a solution to the problem, it will bring attention to the issue with the hope that a larger organization will step in and really make some headway. It is unfortunate that a celebrity, or NBA star for that matter has to take the issue into his own hands for our local government to recognize and make attempts at a resolution. However unfortunate that may be, it is the hopeful start of rebuilding our local economy that was bruised (to say it lightly) from the mortgage and real estate markets.
The good thing is that Orlando employers are still hiring and there is tremendous growth in the health care and hospitality sectors of our community. Proof of this is at the job selection on EmploymentGuide.com and our upcoming Summer Diversity Job Fair and Education Showcase on July 29th. With over 40 companies already signed up and many more to come, we are trying to play our part in helping Orlando and the Central Florida community continue to grow.
So how about it Orlando, how do you see Shaq making a difference? Can one man, even a big-man, single-handily help those in need in our local community? Sound off in the comments!
Happy hunting Orlando!
