  • How do my friends introduce me?
  • Do I like that?
  • What does Google know about me?
  • Do I like that?
  • How do I want to be introduced?

Tips To Submitting Your Resume Via Email

At job fair time we receive a large amount of resumes for our resume CD, that we give to employers. It is filled with resumes from job seekers that cannot be present at the event for whatever reason - from already employed to lack of transportation, to those out of town or looking to relocate. In getting these resume I cannot help myself look at them from the prospect of an employer receiving resumes for an open position.

In this quick post I wanted to point out some major red flags and some ways to make your resume more memorable before they even open it to see your great credentials.

The email address.

By now you would think you would have registered a free email with Google (even Yahoo or Hotmail) that consisted of your yourname@gmail.com or some combination. Yet more than half of the resumes come from emails like pac4life@aol.com or babylegs1987@yahoo.com (both made up emails). Your first impression is not when you meet someone in person, it is the first time your digital footprint comes into their view. So go, right now, and register for a free gmail account that represents you and your brand the best that it can.

Subject Line.

Many people working at a desk job receive plenty of email everyday. More than half is junk, from coupons to newsletters to SPAM. The quickest way to end up getting looked over is to have a poor subject line, or no subject line at all. The subject line is there to serve one purpose - get the attention of the recipient so they open it. For you guys, get right to the point - John Smith's Resume for XYZ Position.

Follow Directions.

This one gets me the most, so I am sure HR directors just skip these types of resumes. On the job posting, in the ad or when talking to someone, there was at some point directions to follow when submitting your resume. Some are more direct than others. For our resume CD we ask for resumes is MS Word. When I see resumes come in from HTML, .txt or just copied into the body of the email I can tell that the person didn't take the extra time to read the directions. This sounds minimal, but when employers receive 100+ resumes for one position, the first to go are the ones that don't follow their instructions. If you do not follow instructions before you get the job, how can they expect you to follow them once you are in that position?

Not being personal.

Much like the last point, employers want to see that you are doing at least some minimal homework before you hit the apply button. This can be as easy as addressing them by name (my name is part of my email address), by company, position or other unique feature. Again you are trying to get their attention and stay top of mind.

As you look at the time you are spending looking for an applying for jobs, really ask yourself how much time and detail you are putting into the process. Your reward will be much higher if you put in the effort.

I look forward to seeing a bunch of you next Tuesday at the Orlando Job Fair and I hope you come by one of my presentations on the Internet and Social Media to enhance your job search. If you have any questions at all, feel free to shoot them over and we will do whatever it takes to put you in a position to land that next job!

-Greg

P.S. If you want to be on that resume CD, please send a MS Word copy of your resume to greg.rollett@employmentguide.com and I'll be sure to find a spot for you!

45% of HR Professionals Use Social Networks to Research Job Candidates

When i opened my inbox this morning I found an interesting statistic that we have been talking to you guys about since we started this blog two and a half years ago - that HR professionals are looking into what you do online when they are looking into bringing you in for an interview and during the hiring process.

This latest data comes courtesy of eMarketer and I wanted to share some of the highlights.

How they look for you:

  • Google + Yahoo (41%)
  • Facebook (29%)
  • LinkedIn (26%)
Most of the research resulted in not bringing someone in for that position. The most common turnoffs were not surprising to me, but they are obviously still a problem.

Online Job Seekers StatsOn the flip side, and the side we will be talking about at the Orlando Job Fair and Employment Sessions on September 22nd, are the reasons to bring a candidate in for an interview or give you a leg up on competition.

Why employers hire people based on online profilesThis brings us to a quick checklist to assess your online presentation that employers may find when looking you up or sourcing for resumes.
  • Google Yourself (try it with Google, Yahoo and Bing and try adding locations, job titles and other keyphrases that an employer may use in conjunction with your name)
  • Audit all of your social networks. Even dormant ones can come back to haunt you.
  • Buy yourname.com.
  • Start blogging on that domain on the career and industry that you want to work in.
  • Build your personal brand to one that employers will find appealing and paint you as an asset to their company.
For more on social media, social networks and the online job process, register for the Orlando Job Fair and Employment Session where we will go in depth on how to build a great online brand and find avenues to give you a leg up on the competition while looking for a job.

Why Are Orlando Employment Guide Job Fairs Different

Greg Rollett was out at the UCF Rosen College giving a presentation to the Hospitality Event Marketing students on local events and provided a little insight into the Orlando Job Fairs that the Employment Guide has been throwing this year.

We like to think we offer the job seekers every opportunity to succeed by bringing the best companies, trend setting information and top notch resources to every job fair. This has led to things like an appearance from the Gov. Charlie Crist, a standing room only session on Social Media at DeVry University, Job Seeker Secrets Sessions at Strayer University and a resume workshop that lasted 2 hours after the event was scheduled to end.

All this has contributed to the over 1,600 people being placed into positions from our 3 previous events this year.

Are you next?

We want to hear from you! What do you want to see at the next Orlando Job Fair? Leave your response in the comments.

Orlando Pink Slip Party - Tuesday, September 8th

Pink Slip Party OrlandoEarlier today I was contacted by Omar Caiola about an unusual event that really has some promising intentions for job seekers in the Orlando area. The event is called a Pink Slip Party, and is a live networking event where job seekers, companies and media converge to talk about employment and help to build relationships that can get people jobs.

I wanted to know more about the event so I got Omar to answer some questions about the Pink Slip Party that is going down next Tuesday.

OJS: Where did the idea for the Pink Slip Party come from?
The idea has been around for a bit but it originated when people were receiving PINK SLIPS at their jobs, hence the name Pink Slip Party

Is this your first event?
It is here in Orlando, but we are based in Miami.

Can you tell us about the event, the where's, the when's and the who's?
The event will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 8 from 7-10pm at Trotter's Sports bar and Grill. We will be hosting employees and employers along with other established professionals networking under one roof.

Trotter's Sports Bar and Grill is located at:
6400 Time Square Ave
Orlando, FL, 32835

What can people looking for jobs in Orlando expect to get out of the Pink Slip Party?
They will meet many interesting people, collect many business cards and contacts, book meetings and the ultimate would be that they walk out of their with a job.

What can companies in Orlando seek to gain by coming out to the Pink Slip Party?
Much free exposure to the community and to fellow business leaders in Orlando along with a chance to sell their services.
If someone wanted to get involved, where should they go for information?
They need to call the Pinkslip Orlando Party Orlando Offices and ask for Omar at 407.459.3149.

What is your opinion of the Orlando and Central Florida job scene?
Right now it seems a bit challenging, but it doesn't mean that we should be down on ourselves. This is the time to branch out and attend events like PINKSLIP which allows you to make new contacts in a more relaxed environment.

What are some things that people looking for jobs can do to position themselves to find an opportunity that is out there?
Well like I stated in the past...attending networking events is great....Also online is an amazing way to seek new opportunities...join social websites (keep it clean and professional), start blogging, use the city resources as a tool, the EmploymentGuide.com is a great source as well and remember to feel good about yourself and keep your head up. This recession is a temp thing, keep a positive attitude, things will get better.

Anything else you want to add?
Again this is a FREE event and it will result in contacts for your future.

Thanks Omar for letting the community know about the Pink Slip Party happening on Tuesday, September 8th at Trotter's Bar and Grill. Please let us know how the event goes and what job seekers are talking about.

You can also follow the Orlando Pink Slip Party on Twitter.
