Orlando Job Fair Recap

On Wednesday, over 1,000 people from across Central Florida came to the Lowndes Shakespeare Theatre looking for opportunity. That opportunity came in the form of a new job, career or a career change.

The event was co-sponsored by the AARP and the caliber of candidates was at an all time high. The event also featured over 100 seniors from Colonial High School. Workforce Central Florida provided a helping hand with computers and counselors on hand to work with job seekers that needed some hands on techo0logy help.

Based on post event surveys, the employers at the event were looking to hire over 250+ positions, and some, such as Wyndham were looking to bring on over 100 new people in their immediate future.

These same employers estimated that they would be interviewing and calling back over 185 of the job seekers from the event (this includes results from only 8 of the 22 hiring companies).

The AARP held 3 sessions on the Power of Branding at 50+ that included objectives to help experienced workers
  • understand the new realities of job hunting

  • learn how to sell their personal brand

  • how to leverage that personal brand in their resume and interview
  • creating and seeing the value in an "elevator speech"
If you were a job seeker that attended the event, we want to hear from you. Tell us your story in the comments below, or send an email to greg.rollett@employmentguide.com.

Have a great weekend Orlando and happy hunting.

Dr. Woody Talks The You Plan At Miami Job Fair

(read the end of the post to see how you can win a free copy of The You Plan!)

This week I traveled to Miami and particiapted at the Job Fair at the Miami Job Corps Center. At the event we had a special guest stop by, Dr. Michael M. Woodward, or Dr. Woody for short.

Dr. Woody just released his new book, The You Plan, which looks at ways to proactively look for opportunities in this new economy while looking for employment. I had the opportunity to ask him a few questions about the book as well as how people can turn their passion into a paycheck, something we deep down want to accomplish.

His teachings are based off of a system he coins VIPER, Values, Intrinsics, Passion, Essence and Roadmap. Here is a graphic that explains more.
