5 Common Job Seeker Blunders

Have you sent out tons of resumes to no avail? In this week's blog, we'll give you a 5-point checklist to help you get over the hump!

If you've been searching for a job for quite some time, it may be time to re-evaluate your process. Here are 5 blunders that job seekers often make.

1. Send out too many resumes. Sounds odd, right? The problem arises when job seekers send out the same resume to every position they apply for. Seasoned recruiters will easily pick up on this and discard your application. Make sure that you tailor your resume to each position you apply for.

2. Have an easily accessible Facebook account. So…you just downed a 12-pack of beer and got kicked out of the local bar? Yikes! Not only is this scenario inappropriate behavior, but it could also be sabotaging your job search. Employers WILL check your social media profile so either 1) keep them clean, or 2) set them to private! (We prefer option #1 for the record!)

3. Give the hiring manager a call. Did the application explicitly tell you to call for more information? More often than not, recruiters only want to talk to candidates they deem qualified. If you annoy them with a phone call, it can often disqualify you, even if you're well qualified. The hiring process can often take a great deal of time, so be patient. Also, only utilize the method of communication stated in the job application.

4. Come to the interview and simply answer the interviewers' questions. Hiring managers want to see a genuine interest from candidates in their company and the position. Be sure to research the company and have questions prepared pertaining to the position you're applying for. Also show an eagerness for advancement and responsibility. Do so, and your credibility will sky-rocket!

5. You had a great interview and are simply waiting for the hiring manager to call you back. Always, always, always write a thank you note to everyone you interviewed with. If you had an extensive conversation with the receptionist, write he/she one as well. This is a simple thing that speaks volumes about a candidates character and professionalism.
